Play-by-Play, Calgary Flames on Sportsnet 960 The FAN


With a career in broadcasting and hockey operations spanning over 15 years, Derek Wills signed on with Sportsnet 960 The FAN as the play-by-play announcer for Calgary Flames radio broadcasts in August 2014.

Prior to joining Sportsnet, Wills served as the voice of the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs and acted as the club’s Senior Director of Broadcasting, Communications and Team Services.

A native of Port Colborne, ON, Wills joined the Hamilton Bulldogs as a play-by-play announcer in 2001. During his 13 seasons in Hamilton, Wills called 1,147 consecutive Bulldogs games, including the team’s five AHL Conference Finals appearances and two Calder Cup Final runs. Wills also announced the play-by-play during the 2012 AHL Outdoor Classic at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton, ON.

In addition to his work with the Hamilton Bulldogs, Wills has served as an AHL Insider for SiriusXM NHL Network Radio and held the position of Lead Producer for AHL Plays of the Week. He also contributed to the AHL All-Star Game broadcasts in 2004 and 2007.

In 2005, Wills was presented with the James H. Ellery Memorial Award in recognition of his outstanding broadcast work for the AHL and Hamilton Bulldogs.

Wills made his NHL broadcast debut on January 24, 2010 when he called the play-by-play for the Buffalo Sabres alongside noted colour commentator Harry Neale.
