Headlining Edmonton Oilers regional broadcasts for the past 15 years, Gene Principe joined Sportsnet in 2001. Giving Oilers fans a front row seat to all the action, Principe continued his work as rinkside reporter for the NHL on Sportsnet in October 2014.
Born and raised in Edmonton, Principe began his broadcasting career as a radio and television reporter with CFJC TV in Kamloops, BC after graduating from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Following his time in Kamloops, Principe went on to work as a reporter for CFRN TV in Edmonton, CFCN TV in Lethbridge, AB and CKND TV in Winnipeg before moving to Toronto to join the Global TV broadcast team. In 2001, Principe signed on with Sportsnet and returned to his hometown to work as the game night host and reporter for the Edmonton Oilers regional broadcasts.
In 2004, Principe was recognized with the Sportsnet News Hound Award for his dedication to reporting and to the network.
To date, career highlights for Principe include covering the World Series in 2004, reporting from NHL player’s European tour in 2004, covering several Stanley Cup finals and NHL Drafts, covering hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympics and covering cycling and other events at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Loving his job more every day, Principe currently resides in Edmonton with his wife, Karen and their three children.
