John Shannon has seen it, done it and been there when it comes to all things sports broadcasting. The 36-year sports media veteran brings extensive experience from both behind and in front of the camera to his role as an insider and analyst for the NHL on Sportsnet.
Shannon has been a member of Sportsnet’s hockey broadcast team since 2009, contributing to a variety of NHL on Sportsnet broadcasts, including Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey and Sportsnet’s NHL Trade Deadline coverage.
An Emmy award-winning producer, Shannon began his career in television as a producer with CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, producing both national and regional NHL games. He was later promoted to Vice President and Senior Producer at CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada.
Over the next decade, Shannon assumed producing roles at CTV, the CFL, Sportschannel America and Olympic Radio before returning to CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada in 1994 as the Executive Producer. In 2002, Shannon joined NBC Sports as the Senior Director during the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games while also acting as the Vice President of Leafs TV/Raptors NBA TV. In 2006, Shannon joined the NHL as a Senior Vice President of Broadcasting, followed by Executive Vice President of Broadcast, before moving in front of the camera with Sportsnet in 2009.
Throughout his career, Shannon has produced more than 3000 NHL games and more than 30 Stanley Cup Finals.
Shannon was the recipient of a Gemini award in 1994 for Best Special Event Coverage and an Emmy Award for Outstanding Live Sports Special in 2003 for his work on NBC’s coverage of the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games.
